Microsoft's Office Lens App: Set to Discontinue on Mobile
In a strategic shift, Microsoft will be discontinuing its Office Lens mobile application. As of February 9th, support will be phased out, and by March 9th, the app will cease to operate.
Transition to OneDrive
Locking onto a more unified platform strategy, Microsoft has embedded the functionality of its standalone Office Lens app into the broader OneDrive service. Users can still scan and digitize images of whiteboards, documents, and more, directly through OneDrive. This integration enables photos to be upgraded into Word or PDF formats while allowing edits like cropping and alignment.
Historical Context
The original release of Microsoft's Office Lens app traces back to 2015, initially debuting on iOS and Android platforms. This move was a part of Microsoft's 'mobile-first' push, which saw a series of apps developed post-Windows Phone era with rich Office-software connectivity.
Future Implications
The redundancy of maintaining a separate application, given OneDrive's enhanced features, led to the decision to retire Office Lens. Users looking to continue using similar functionalities are encouraged to transition to OneDrive, which centralizes the capabilities without diminishing their utility.
