Surfer Found After Over a Day, Dramatic Coast Guard Rescue
An exhaustive search by the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies culminated in the rescue of a surfer off Puerto Rico's shores Friday. The individual, who had been missing for more than a full day, was located in a gripping rescue captured on film.
The 68-year-old surfer ventured into the waters by the city of Aguadilla near Surfer's Beach around midday on Thursday, as reported by his daughter. After losing contact, concerns grew when the man did not return to his Airbnb, prompting the host to alert authorities by Friday evening.
Aerial footage of the rescue mission showed the Coast Guard team hovering above the isolated surfer, ultimately lifting him safely from a rocky reef into their helicopter.
Post-rescue, a touching phone exchange took place between the surfer's relieved family and Coast Guard Capt. Robert Stiles, the Deputy Sector Commander at San Juan, who shared the positive outcome.
"Although he's likely feeling the effects of dehydration and a rough night, he is communicating," stated Stiles. Medical professionals were ready to assess him immediately, confirming his safety.
"Oh my goodness, thank you endlessly!" a grateful voice said over the call. "We can't thank you enough for saving him."
Through a concerted effort between Coast Guard officials, aircrew, and local partners, the surfing enthusiast was found thanks to exceptional teamwork after being unaccounted for over 30 hours.
The Coast Guard coordinated with various groups, including the Puerto Rico Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, and a specialized Puerto Rican maritime unit, mobilizing resources to scour the land and sea.
Using a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter deployed from Air Station Borinquen, Coast Guard personnel meticulously searched the waters and shores north of Aguadilla, where the search ended successfully.
The helicopter crew eventually identified a man who matched the description near Surfer’s Beach, trapped on rocky terrain. An aerial approach was necessary as the difficult location negated access by either land or sea vessels.
They managed to secure the stranded man by executing an aerial lift, getting him airborne from his precarious position among the rocks.
"What a superb conclusion!" affirmed Capt. Stiles. "This operation could have turned grim. We urge anyone heading into the waters to plan appropriately, keep others informed of their whereabouts, and wear suitable safety gear."
