Exploring 63 National Parks: Why Grand Teton Tops My List

I've embarked on the journey of experiencing all 63 major United States national parks, and Grand Teton has continually stood out as my unrivaled favorite.

In Wyoming, this landlocked state offers a surprising array of water activities and charming nearby towns.

A Decade of Discovery

When my travels through national parks began nearly ten years ago, it was driven by curiosity rather than clear objectives. Nevertheless, I eventually took on the personal challenge of visiting all 63 major parks on my own.

People often inquire about which park I love the most, often assuming it’s an impossible choice. However, one of my earliest adventures brought me to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where it captured my heart from the start.

The Majestic Teton Peaks

The first sight of the formidable Teton Range moved me to tears, and its beauty continues to be an emotional experience even after more than a dozen returns. As one of North America's most 'youthful' ranges, it retains sharp, striking peaks owing to minimal erosion, setting it apart from others.

Without the traditional foothills, the peaks' grandeur is startlingly enhanced, offering a breathtaking spectacle that leaves viewers in awe.

Aquatic Wonders in the Tetons

Despite its landlocked location, Grand Teton is famed for its plentiful water resources. Activities abound in this water lover’s heaven — float down the iconic Snake River, dive into the refreshing String Lake, enjoy a boat tour on Jenny Lake, or paddle around on Jackson Lake. There's water to be appreciated from almost every viewpoint, a rare feature in mountainous parks and a welcome treat in summer.

Grand Teton's Spectacular Wildlife

For wildlife enthusiasts, Grand Teton does not disappoint. Deer, bison, elk, moose, and both black and grizzly bears populate the area, offering ample opportunities for observation from a safe vantage point.

Exploring the park on horseback adds another dimension to the experience, as this is allowed on many trails, providing a unique perspective of the landscape.

Beyond Hiking: Activities Galore

While hiking and solitude in nature are favorites of mine, Grand Teton offers a variety of other attractions. Unlike many other national parks, it boasts fully developed amenities. Visitors can enjoy a meal and a drink at a pizza place within the park, a rarity compared to other parks. Accommodation options range from simple campgrounds and cabins to luxurious hotels.

A unique feature of Grand Teton is the presence of a commercial airport right within its boundaries, enhancing its accessibility.

Nearby Attractions Await

South of the park lies Jackson, Wyoming, a vibrant mountain town rich with shopping venues, dining experiences, and a wide range of outdoor activities to fit any budget.

I enjoy meandering through the historic center, grabbing a coffee or treat at Persephone Bakery before heading out to the park, and ending the day at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar for a drink enhanced by live music.

The 'Idaho side of the Tetons' is easily accessible, featuring quaint towns like Driggs, Victor, and Tetonia situated just beyond Teton Pass. These communities offer a laid-back atmosphere complete with rural charm and outdoor pursuits. Moreover, Yellowstone National Park is close enough to be a convenient day trip as you base yourself in the Tetons.

A Personal Connection

There’s an inexplicable draw to the Tetons, a sentiment that is difficult to articulate. The feeling I get here is unmatched, ensuring my continued return. The crispness of the air, the serenity of the lakes, and the imposing mountains make this park stand out above others. Whether watching light dance off the mountain tops or wading into a cool, sapphire lake, Grand Teton invigorates and refreshes me.
