Trump Discusses ExxonMobil's Role in Venezuela

During a conversation on Air Force One, President Donald Trump indicated a preference for excluding ExxonMobil from Venezuelan projects.

While responding to a reporter's query about oil corporations investing in Venezuela, Trump suggested that ExxonMobil might be excluded. He commented, "My inclination is to leave Exxon out. Their answers were not satisfactory, perhaps even evasive."

The dissatisfaction stemmed from Exxon's reaction to a proposed $100 billion venture in Venezuela's oil sector. Darren Woods, Exxon's CEO, shared his perspective with Trump, emphasizing that current conditions in Venezuela are unsuitable for investment.

Woods elaborated, "From a legal and commercial standpoint, the current framework in Venezuela renders it an unviable investment opportunity." These comments were made during a session at the White House with oil industry leaders and the President.

Exxon's ties to Venezuela include previous operations, both of which ended with the seizure of their assets by the Venezuelan government. Woods noted that considerable reforms in Venezuela would be essential for Exxon to reconsider its position. However, he expressed confidence in the Trump administration's potential to facilitate such changes.

In contrast, other oil company figures exhibited a more optimistic outlook. Mark Nelson from Chevron expressed to Trump the intention to double the production output in collaboration with their Venezuelan associates, starting immediately.

These discussions took place shortly after a U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of then-President Nicolás Maduro, who now faces legal proceedings in New York on charges related to drug trafficking and weapons.

Despite recent volatility, ExxonMobil's stock has shown resilience, maintaining stability and achieving a 16% increase over the past year.
