U.S. Firms Could Potentially Invest in Venezuelan Oil, Energy Secretary Indicates
Energy Secretary Chris Wright suggested on Sunday that American businesses may soon find themselves more involved in Venezuela's oil sector. As the country navigates new conditions post-crisis, there's a likelihood for increased business investments.
"The decision rests with American enterprises. There is definitely a genuine possibility," Wright stated during his appearance on 'Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.'
Wright clarified, however, that the U.S. is not managing Venezuela's national oil company, PDVSA. President Trump, on the previous Friday, urged American oil firms to consider returning to Venezuela.
Wright explained, "We aren't operating their oil sales presently. We have imposed restrictions on the export of their oil, needing American crude marketers to handle all transactions. The proceeds from these sales are redirected back to benefit both Americans and Venezuelans."
There have been developments since January 3, involving allegations against the Venezuelan leadership of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking. These charges were refuted by Maduro and his spouse. Wright emphasized the expectation of swift changes in Venezuela due to U.S. involvement.
"Our influence through controlling their oil sales is anticipated to catalyze rapid improvement within Venezuela," Wright expressed. "While early days, with just eight passed, the prospects are encouraging."
Despite legal troubles faced by some Venezuelan officials in the U.S., Wright highlighted the necessity of collaborating with them to facilitate the country's transition towards a more representative governance structure.
"We must engage with current power holders to steer Venezuela towards political reinvention, preventing its collapse in the process," Wright said.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged the lack of a recognized Venezuelan government, stressing the U.S. ambition to restore Venezuela's self-governance and sovereignty.
Meanwhile, President Trump, via social media on Sunday, hinted at pressure on Cuba, another regional actor, highlighting the cessation of Venezuelan oil and urging diplomatic negotiations. Despite these assertions, Wright mentioned to Brennan that there is no immediate demand for Mexico to halt oil supplies to Cuba.
