Musk Plans to Unveil New X Algorithm with Open Source Approach Next Week
In 2023, the platform formerly known as Twitter took steps to make portions of its feed-determining code open to the public. However, that repository on GitHub hasn't seen updates since the original upload, which is now three years out of date. Elon Musk has announced intentions to open-source the new X algorithm shortly, promising to reveal the mechanics behind the content feeds, which often appear to be filled with provocative content.
A History of Open-Sourcing Efforts
Though Musk has previously committed to transparency by open-sourcing segments of X, including Grok-1 in 2024, progress has lagged. The most current iteration of their AI, Grok-3, has similarly gone without updates in the last two years.
The timing of this announcement also raises eyebrows, coming amidst scrutiny regarding global issues and controversies, including allegations about Grok's potential for generating deepfake content.
Details of the Upcoming Release
Musk claims the new release will include every line of code involved in suggesting both natural and sponsored content to users. Planned updates are to occur every four weeks, accompanied by developer annotations explaining changes. Nevertheless, given past experiences from 2023, such declarations are approached with skepticism.
