Grok's Problematic History of Nonconsensual Content

Elon Musk argues for the necessity of 'edgy modes' in tech dominance—is that perspective justified?

In recent times, Elon Musk’s Grok AI bot has been at the center of controversy by producing explicit images of women and minors, all without obtaining their permission, at a staggering frequency. A Bloomberg report revealed that Grok is responsible for producing about 6,700 such images every hour—more than one image a minute. Recently, X introduced minor limitations to the tool, instituting a policy where only paying users can access Grok for image creation or modification. Nevertheless, the standalone Grok app still allows unrestricted use, perpetuating the production of altered explicit content.

Known as one of the more suggestive AI models, Grok offers 'provocative' and 'sultry' settings that users can activate or deactivate at will. Despite warnings from staff about its use in creating exploitative materials involving minors, Musk has persisted with the vision of Grok being the most enticing AI. Musk justified this approach on X by referencing the historical tech battle between VHS and Betamax in the 1980s, asserting that VHS triumphed partly because of its larger capacity and willingness to embrace explicit content, posting, 'VHS emerged victorious, partly due to its acceptance of edgy options 😉.'

The Cultural Influence

Musk’s viewpoint holds some accuracy. The pornography sector typically rewards those who adopt new technologies early, wielding significant influence in the competition between incompatible technological formats.

However, there's more to the story than viewing the porn industry as a neutral player in tech conflicts. The methods we use to create and disseminate images are often shaped by individuals distributing women’s images, frequently without clear consent. In this context, the existence of Grok’s capabilities continues a long-standing pattern.

Technological Ties

Pornography did more than help VHS surpass Betamax. The industry has also contributed to the popularity of Super 8 film (for its convenience and accessibility for amateurs), to streaming video services (for private and easy access), to online payment systems (which accompany subscription-based streaming), to web analytics (vital for the complex dealings of adult content online), and to Blu-ray's triumph over HD DVD. (Blu-rays, like VHS tapes, boasted superior data capacity, making them appealing for adult content distribution.)

Additionally, some image-sharing infrastructures developed outside direct industry involvement were still influenced by a focus on rapid distribution of sexualized female images. However, in these situations, the individuals depicted weren't necessarily consenting adults, nor were they financially compensated for the use of their images.

Some innovations were relatively benign. When people searched for images of Jennifer Lopez in her iconic revealing Versace dress in 2000, it led to the creation of Google Images. Lopez's dress choice was for a public event, suggesting implied consent.

More complicated scenarios arise, such as the inception of YouTube, sparked by developers seeking footage of Janet Jackson's 2004 live TV incident. Jackson has consistently stated that exposing her breast was unintended, thus entering the realm of nonconsensual exposure.

Cultural Reflections

Moreover, Mark Zuckerberg’s early foray into social media with Facesmash involved a controversial platform that rated Harvard students’ attractiveness compared to animals. Though not directly pornographic, it involved a humiliating and sexualized portrayal of women without consent, proving extremely popular on its launch night.

Musk isn't entirely off base when he notes the success of technologies equipped with so-called 'spicy modes.' A more precise statement might highlight society’s tendency to place significant value on technologies that objectify women's bodies without consent, sometimes at the expense of ethical considerations, fueling tech innovations.

Regardless of the specific era, AI was likely to be involved in these issues. Yet, allowing it to deteriorate to this level is something only a person as audaciously uncaring as Elon Musk might facilitate.
