Security Highlights: ICE's New Surveillance Power Over Local Phones
Recent reports shed light on how the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has gained a significant new surveillance capability. By leveraging advanced technologies from Penlink, including Tangles and Webloc, ICE agents now have the tools to monitor mobile phones across entire neighborhoods. These platforms aid in tracking device locations over time, offering a detailed map of individual movements between home, work, and other frequently visited locations. Penlink enhances these capabilities by purchasing substantial commercial location data.
Nathan Freed Wessler from the American Civil Liberties Union emphasized the risks, stating, 'This level of detailed location data provides a comprehensive view of personal movement, posing a threat when handled by an agency with insufficient oversight.'
