Bose Shifts to Open Source for SoundTouch Speakers
Official Support Scheduled to End Soon
In a recent announcement, Bose stated that the SoundTouch series of home speakers would soon no longer receive cloud-based support. This change was initially expected to limit or eliminate many existing features due to a lack of updates. However, there's some relief for current SoundTouch owners as the company plans a switch to open-source software.
Bose has started distributing API documentation to its users, which enables third-party developers to develop and introduce their own compatible features and tools for SoundTouch products. While this transition requires time, Bose has decided to delay the termination date for cloud updates. The speakers were originally slated to stop receiving updates in February, but this has now been extended to May 6.
Additional Support for SoundTouch Users
Even after support ceases, SoundTouch speakers will maintain functionality with AirPlay and Spotify Connect—features that were previously uncertain. Additionally, the companion app will not be retired but will function in a simplified mode. Originally, the app was set for complete discontinuation, indicating that customer feedback on forums like Reddit played a significant role in this decision.
Introduced in 2013, the SoundTouch line entered the market with prices starting at $600, marking them as a premium choice. Understandably, owners were anxious about the prospect of their expensive devices losing essential functionality. Bose's responsiveness to customer frustrations has been well-received.
