Logitech's Unrenewed Certificate Causes MacOS Mouse Mayhem

If you're among the Mac users whose Logitech mouse is acting up, there's a resolution in sight as Logitech has issued a fix. This update comes on the heels of numerous complaints from Reddit users indicating that the Logi Options Plus software, essential for customizing and controlling Logitech devices, malfunctioned. As a result, users were unable to modify scrolling settings, button functions, and other gestures.

One particular user on Reddit noted that their mouse's scrolling and additional buttons weren't behaving as they wished. Upon launching the Logi Options Plus app to pinpoint the problem, they found it was caught in a perpetual loading cycle. Additionally, Logitech acknowledged that their G Hub app, which serves a similar purpose for gaming peripherals from the Logitech G series, was encountering similar issues.

Mac Users Affected by Expired Certificate

According to details shared on Logitech’s support webpage, the culprit of this fiasco was an 'expired certificate' necessary for the functioning of these apps. Fortunately, only Mac systems were impacted, as Windows computers remained unaffected. macOS has specific restrictions that may stop apps from launching if they lack a valid certificate, a challenge not unfamiliar to Mac users.

Logitech remedied the situation by rolling out a patch that needs a manual installation due to the updater within the app also being compromised by the expired certificate. The update ensures that user-defined settings, customizations, and profiles stay unaltered post-installation. Presently, this solution supports macOS 26 Tahoe, macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 14 Sonoma, and macOS 13 Ventura, with older macOS versions expected to have a remedy in the foreseeable future.

Logitech's Apology and Path Forward

Logitech spokesperson ATXsantucci candidly expressed remorse, stating, 'We fell short here. This is an inexcusable error. We sincerely apologize for the trouble it has caused our users.'
