According to Similarweb insights, December saw a remarkable 28.4% rise in Gemini's traffic, in stark contrast to a 5.6% decline for ChatGPT. Although OpenAI's ChatGPT maintains a strong front, these changes could herald evolving dynamics in the AI sector.

A closer examination of site visit data, limited to chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com, reflects only a slice of the broader landscape. Excluded are the influences of app use and integrations like Google Search’s AI summaries—factors that could further shape AI adoption patterns. Despite potential overlaps, the statistics still highlight a noteworthy trend: the race is tightening as competitors gradually close in.

Year-Over-Year Traffic Dynamics

Viewed year-over-year, both platforms have experienced growth, yet at vastly different rates. ChatGPT's traffic swelled by 49.5%, while Gemini's skyrocketed by an impressive 563.6%. December alone bore witness to 5.5 billion visits to ChatGPT, overshadowing Gemini's 1.7 billion, though the gap is narrowing with each passing month.

Other AI platforms like DeepSeek and Character.AI lagged considerably, each drawing under 400 million visits, indicating the sheer lead maintained by ChatGPT despite rising competition.

Strategic Implications for OpenAI

The aftermath of Gemini 3's introduction saw it praised for superior visual and creative capacities, along with enhanced coding abilities, positioning it as a formidable player. Google's strategic advantage shines in its ability to integrate its AI prowess deeply within its widely utilized search ecosystem—an inherent edge OpenAI needs to overcome.

The rivalry extends beyond text AI, encompassing the sphere of image generation. Following Google's launch of the Nano Banana Pro image model, OpenAI responded with ChatGPT Images, underscoring the breadth of their competitive scope.
