Many might not recall the intriguing game controllers that never quite reached mainstream popularity. In the effort to provide gamers with alternatives different from conventional choices like the DualSense or Joy-Cons, third-party manufacturers often explore distinct paths. GameSir's new Swift Drive, a concept name that could be subject to change, exemplifies such innovation. It echoes features of the 1998 JogCon for the PlayStation 1, indicating a lineage of creative designs.

This controller stands out due to its standout feature—an integrated, miniature steering wheel placed right at the heart of the device. It's equipped with force feedback technology, typically reserved for full-scale steering wheel setups. The company boasts that their 'high precision' Hall Effect encoder grants it remarkable accuracy when steering.

Adjustable and Immersive Gaming Experience

Players can modify the steering range anywhere between 30 and 1080 degrees, though maintaining a higher range is likely optimal to fully embrace this unique aspect of the device. Furthermore, GameSir integrates Hall Effect sensors within the standard joysticks and buttons, and each trigger is designed with an individual haptic motor, emulating realistic effects like braking and wheel slippage. A series of RGB lights adorns the upper section of the controller, attempting to mirror the RPMs from your gaming experience—a visually appealing feature.

Hands-On Experience at CES

During CES, I had the opportunity to navigate a large truck through a simplified demo area featuring wireframe ramps and curves. The force feedback provided substantial strength, making the simulated driving quite engaging as I maneuvered the compact wheel with both thumbs. The setup permits customization with varied wheel plates, enhancing its resemblance to a smaller steering-wheel-style controller. It also employs a locking mechanism when oversteering or halting occurs. Although power longevity might be a concern, the controller promises an impressive battery life, sustaining 20 to 30 hours on a full charge.
