CES 2026: Introducing the Modular Game Controller from Hyperkin and Gamesir
Evolution in Gaming Controllers: The X5 Alteron
For years, I've stuck with a singular smartphone game controller for my iPhone due to the lack of options that stand out. However, CES 2026 unveiled something entirely distinct—the X5 Alteron. This is the result of a creative partnership between GameSir, known for its experimental accessories, and Hyperkin, celebrated for nostalgic controller designs.
Claimed to be the very first completely modular mobile gaming controller worldwide, the standout feature of the X5 Alteron is its interchangeable stick, D-pad, and button modules. Adding to its versatility, it boasts a flexible grip compatible with a range of devices from iPhones and Android smartphones to the Switch and iPads, and it even includes Bluetooth connectivity for PC use.
Discovering the Prototype on Display
Displayed at the event, Gamesir showcased a prototype that, although non-functional, featured interchangeable modules. These could potentially mimic the configurations of several popular setups. If asymmetric sticks or a nostalgic yellow Gamecube stick pique your interest, they are available. Additionally, for Sega Saturn fans, a six-button format is also on offer. Prefer symmetrical sticks? That's an option too, along with built-in rumble motors for an enhanced gaming experience.
Customization and Future Prospects
Modules fit seamlessly into the controller thanks to magnetic attachment, though early versions posed removal challenges. The controller promises extensive customization: you can adjust stick heights and swap buttons at your discretion. Hyperkin and Gamesir plan future modifications, including GameCube, N64, and even a trackpad module aimed at first-person shooters.
In terms of technology, the X5 Alteron incorporates capacitive sticks rather than the typical Hall-Effect variety, which could lead to greater precision, despite this technology not being widely used in controllers. Hall-Effect analog triggers are included at the back, promising a fresh experience for users. Although the release date and cost are yet to be announced, the innovation certainly captures the curiosity of mobile gamers everywhere.
