Innovative Bird Feeders Can Recognize Birds by Their Songs
New Birdbuddy Models Revealed at CES
This year’s CES is brimming with smart bird feeders, drawing significant attention. This interest might stem from seeing birds enjoy seeds and then fly off, reflecting a sense of untamed beauty absent in the tech-focused environment of CES. Birdbuddy established itself early in the smart bird feeder niche with a Kickstarter campaign that took off spectacularly in 2020. This year, they have taken it up a notch by including the ability to identify birds by their songs.
The manufacturer has introduced two variations: the Birdbuddy 2 and a more budget-friendly version, the Birdbuddy 2 Mini. The Birdbuddy 2 runs on solar energy thanks to its integrated panels. This model is not only larger but it also holds more seeds. Both models are equipped with high-definition cameras that can be adjusted vertically or horizontally, and both include a microphone for detecting bird songs.
The cameras have been enhanced to awaken more promptly when a bird arrives. The modular design of the housing for the seed and camera simplifies the cleaning process. Furthermore, the camera lens is now encased in Gorilla Glass—a feature that might seem excessive, but as Rhian Humphries, the senior public relations manager for Birdbuddy, explains, inquisitive birds often peck at the device, mistaking it for food.
Each day, the AI powering Birdbuddy is trained to learn from actual bird interactions. Users receive a visual recap, or ‘postcard,’ showcasing the birds that visited their feeder that day. The accompanying app provides alerts whenever a new bird Swoops in, allowing users to appreciate a live stream of nature and find some peace.
The Birdbuddy 2 comes with a price tag of $199. It has already sold out during the pre-order stage, with new units set to ship in February. Additional units will be accessible by mid-2026. Meanwhile, the Birdbuddy 2 Mini will be available for $129, with pre-orders beginning in the summer.
