Goto conveys optimism to recent graduates concerned about job prospects in an AI-dominated world. "We're on the brink of witnessing incredible developments, but our desire for enhanced functionality, additional applications, and expansive ecosystems is only going to grow," he remarked in a recent social media post. He perceives AI as a new advanced tier of programming.

Many recent graduates, especially those aiming for positions at Netflix, question the future relevance of software engineers in light of AI advancements. Goto explains that AI acts as an additional abstraction layer rather than indicating the demise of engineering careers.

The rapid evolution of AI tools, such as those developed by Anthropic's Claude, sparks discussions about the continuing value of computer science education and coding proficiency.

The Need for System Design Skills

To maintain a competitive edge, according to Goto, it's crucial for emerging engineers to excel in System Design. "Ensuring newer engineers understand System Design is a priority," he emphasized. "In the foreseeable future, System Design skills will become an essential part of an engineer's toolkit."

Goto cites the video game industry as a preview of future trends. Since the debut of Doom in 1993, technological progress has led to an industry valued at over $100 billion, with significant involvement from Hollywood in major gaming projects.

Envisioning a scenario from the past, Goto illustrates: "Imagine traveling back in time to the early 2000s or 2010s to inform John Carmack about the future of video game engines. Their existence would be astonishing news." Carmack, renowned for his pioneering work on Doom, recently acknowledged the outdated nature of some of his original efforts compared to today's technology.

Game engines have dramatically increased participation in game development, even as they have shifted focus away from traditional systems engineering. These engines are versatile, powering representations like the visually impressive digital environments in Disney's "The Mandalorian."

Predictions and Technological Evolution

While Goto admits his forecasts may not be precise, he bases his expectations on established technological growth patterns, affirming a sustained demand for engineering skills.

"Historically, we have observed processes being simplified through abstraction," he observed. "This trend ultimately contributes to the democratization of technology, making it more accessible to a broader audience."
