Nvidia unveiled a significant leap forward in deep learning-based rendering technologies with the launch of DLSS 4.5 at the CES event. This iteration introduces a groundbreaking second-generation Super Resolution transformer model and an innovative 6x Multi Frame Generation feature for the RTX 50-series graphics cards, leveraging AI to produce up to five supplementary frames per rendered one.

Widespread Benefits for RTX Owners

Today, all RTX users can access DLSS 4.5, though the performance will be superior on Nvidia's freshest RTX 40- and 50-series cards. The newest transformer technology is crafted to advance image quality while also mitigating the visual distortions noted in previous DLSS versions.

A Leap in Computational Power

Henry Lin, who oversees product management at Nvidia, describes this version as their most intricate to date, boasting five times the computation capacity of its predecessor. This advancement is attributed to training on an expansive high-detail dataset, fully utilizing the enhanced Tensor Cores found in the GeForce RTX 40- and 50-series.

Enhanced Scene Understanding in Gaming

Nvidia’s latest DLSS technology now more intelligently interprets in-game environments, employing game engine details to enhance lighting, edge sharpness, and motion precision. Their demonstrations showcased significant enhancements: diminished ghosting, improved anti-aliasing, and reduced shimmering in dynamic scenarios.

Tailored Frame Generation for Maximum Enjoyment

While the AI-driven improvements are advantageously available to all RTX users immediately, owners of RTX 50-series will, in spring, gain access to a new 6x Multi Frame Generation mode. This feature aims to elevate the gaming experience at 240Hz 4K settings by delivering five artificial frames for every single original frame, surpassing the previous maximum of three.

Dynamic Frame Generation Mode

Nvidia introduces a flexible Dynamic Multi Frame Generation mode, switching automatically between generation tiers as needed. According to Lin, during graphically taxing segments, the system ramps up the Frame Generation to maintain seamless performance, reducing it when appropriate as rendering demands lower.

Widespread Accessibility Across Titles

Currently, DLSS 4.5 can be enabled across over 400 games and applications through Nvidia’s platform, empowering RTX users to enforce its application even where updates are pending. However, for RTX 50-series GPUs, the new frame generation modes will see a gradual rollout with a projected timeline extending to spring 2026.
