Dell's Iconic XPS Line Makes a Comeback
Introducing New XPS 14 and 16 Models, and a Sneak Peek at the Slim XPS 13
In a move aimed at simplifying its brand structure, Dell previously eliminated its established PC labels, including the esteemed XPS series, opting for a more straightforward naming convention. The intention was clarity for consumers, but the reality was increased confusion, which we termed a self-inflicted blunder. Observing the decline of Dell's PC market share in 2025, it's clear that the rebranding strategy was a marketing catastrophe.
Acknowledging its misstep, Dell has arrived at CES with exciting updates for brand enthusiasts: the XPS series has been resurrected! The company is eager to enhance the XPS in unprecedented ways. Today, they have unveiled the refreshed XPS 14 and 16 models, which boast a more user-friendly layout than previous models. A notable change is the inclusion of a traditional key function row, replacing the unorthodox capacitive buttons often lost in bright conditions. Additionally, while they maintain the sleek 'invisible' trackpad that lies flush near the wrist area, a new illuminated border provides tactile guidance for trackpad boundaries.
In essence, Dell has addressed critical feedback about the XPS series. Demonstrating its renewed dedication to the brand, Dell will now display the XPS insignia on every new model, shifting away from the older Dell branding. Such a shift signals a significant pivot in brand humility.
The redesign enables a significant reduction in weight and thickness. The new XPS 14 has slimmed down to approximately three pounds, shedding half a pound from its predecessor, while the XPS 16 now weighs 3.6 pounds, a full pound lighter. The updated casings give these models a design reminiscent of the understated elegance of Microsoft's Surface Laptop, which is not necessarily negative. Both laptops harness the power of Intel's latest Panther Lake Core Ultra Series 3 processors, alongside optional OLED displays.
Furthermore, Dell has hinted at a forthcoming XPS 13 later this year, which it says will be the thinnest and lightest in its history, along with a promise of a more affordable price point than any previous XPS.
Customers can anticipate the new XPS 14 and 16 becoming available starting on January 6, with prices set at $1,650 and $1,850, respectively.
