Affordable Smart Lock Option by Kwikset: Aura Reach

Kwikset has stepped into CES 2026 with exciting news, unveiling the Aura Reach, a wallet-friendly smart lock solution built on the Matter-over-Thread standard. This model, priced at $189, is now available for purchase.

This new lock is nearly $100 cheaper than the high-end Halo model. However, choosing the Aura Reach means foregoing some features such as the embedded Wi-Fi and the advanced door sensor that indicates open or closed status. Additionally, the Aura Reach exhibits a more utilitarian appearance and carries a Grade 2 security rating, in contrast to Halo's superior Grade 1.

Compatibility with Smart Home Systems

While Aura integrates with Apple Home via Matter, it doesn’t include the touch-to-unlock functionality available with Apple Home Key. Instead, it boasts a responsive touchscreen keypad with a backlight that activates as you draw near, all thanks to its in-built proximity sensor.

Unlocking options include Bluetooth and proximity-based geofencing. The Kwikset app can also unlock the device using Bluetooth technology. Even without direct Wi-Fi, the Aura can be operated remotely via integration with major platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home, provided you have a Matter controller such as an Apple TV or Echo speaker.

Noteworthy Features

Further enhancing its utility, Kwikset introduces an optional feature to the Aura called Signal Range Boost, which effectively doubles the Matter network's range. This is particularly useful if your Thread network entry point is not immediately adjacent to your main entrance.

For traditionalists, the smart lock continues to support physical key access, utilizing Kwikset’s SmartKey Security enabling easy rekeying by the user.
