Volkswagen Reintroduces Physical Buttons in the ID. Polo EV
Exploring the ID. Polo's Interior, Set for European Debut
Volkswagen is ushering in what could be seen as a revival of traditional car controls. The renowned German brand has showcased the inner workings of its forthcoming compact electric vehicle (EV), the ID. Polo, which prominently features authentic buttons, switches, and a classic audio control knob.
Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's lead designer, has emphasized that their goal was to create an inviting environment within the car. "We've crafted an interior experience that feels instantly familiar and welcoming," he remarked. The implementation of distinct physical buttons speaks to reliability and consistency, while the use of cozy materials adds an attractive touch. Moreover, whimsical elements such as the newly styled retro instrument views inject a bit of Volkswagen's signature humor.
In a conversation from the previous year, Mindt shared with Autocar Volkswagen’s pledge to reintroduce physical buttons for key functions across their vehicle lineup, starting with a concept that has since evolved into the ID. Polo. This promise is realized with the ID. Polo, which incorporates physical buttons below its infotainment screen and on the steering wheel. Additionally, a knob centrally located between the driver’s and passenger’s seats allows for audio adjustments and track or station changes.
Balancing Modern Digital Features with Nostalgic Touches
While Volkswagen is embracing tactile controls once more, it hasn't abandoned digital innovation. The ID. Polo includes a 10.25-inch digital display situated behind the steering wheel, providing all essential driving information. Complementing this display is nearly a 13-inch touchscreen, which handles the infotainment duties. For those who appreciate a blast from the past, the ID. Polo’s dashboard can emulate a vintage Golf I display from the '80s, switchable via a steering wheel button or the infotainment touchscreen.
Volkswagen is charting a course for the ID. Polo as the first in a series of new compact EV offerings, slated for release in Europe this year. Unfortunately, aficionados in the United States will need to wait longer, as there are no current plans for a launch in the American market.
