International Backlash to U.S. Actions in Venezuela
In light of U.S. military actions in Venezuela announced by President Trump, global leaders quickly voiced their responses. Reports of Nicolás Maduro's capture, along with his spouse, drew strong reactions from various countries.
Among those disapproving are several nations historically at odds with the U.S., including some geographically close to Venezuela. These countries urgently appealed for deescalation, pressing concerns about the safety of their nationals in the region.
Reactions from Latin America
Colombia, Venezuela's neighbor, urgently called for calm. The government prioritized protective measures for civilians, ensuring border stability, and preparing for any potential crises involving displacement or humanitarian aid.
Miguel Diaz-Canel, Cuba's leader, branded the strikes as a 'criminal act by the U.S.' and encouraged an immediate international community response.
Condemnation from Iran and Russia
Iran strongly rebuked the attacks, describing them as blatant breaches of Venezuela's sovereignty. Simultaneously, Washington has been at odds with Tehran over recent clashes, with President Trump cautioning Iran about potential U.S. military readiness.
Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled the U.S. military activity as unprovoked aggression. They challenged the justifications for such an act, denouncing the shift from pragmatic diplomacy towards ideological hostility. The statement emphasized dialogue over further conflict and advocated for respecting Venezuela's autonomy from foreign dominion, supporting U.N. deliberations.
European Nations Urge Restraint and Citizen Safety
The E.U.'s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, engaged in dialogues with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and maintained close contact with the ambassador in Caracas, underscoring the need for vigilance.
The European Union reiterated its stance on Maduro's questionable legitimacy while advocating for international norms and caution. The protection of E.U. nationals remains a crucial concern amidst the unfolding events.
Countries such as Italy, Belgium, and Spain shared the focus on citizen safety. Spain's authorities emphasized the importance of litigation under U.N. guidelines, offering mediation to foster peace and resolution.
