Seeking a Truly Secure Phone? This $700 Model Offers That, Plus a Swap-Friendly Battery
Highlights from ZDNET
While sharing data with tech giants like Google and Apple brings ease of use, it can compromise your privacy and security. Along with third-party apps and online platforms, this can further heighten your vulnerability. To mitigate these issues, Punkt has developed the MC03, a smartphone aimed at safeguarding your information.
The MC03 operates on AphyOS, a system designed specifically for privacy with robust security measures to prevent hacking and unauthorized data access, thus reducing risks when you're online.
Equipped with privacy-oriented services such as Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, and VPN, the device allows users to access a curated selection of apps through the App Hub. A secondary store provides wider access, all of which is under the user's personal oversight.
For enhanced privacy protection, the MC03 incorporates a built-in VPN, like Digital Nomad, ensuring secure internet interactions. AphyOS comes complimentary for the initial year, with a $9.99 per month subscription thereafter, although package deals can reduce this cost.
The hardware is crafted in Germany, featuring a 120Hz OLED screen, a 64MP main lens, and an IP68 grade against dust and water. Uniquely, it includes a changeable 5,200mAh battery, a seldom-seen feature in today's smartphones.
At a price of $699, the MC03 is anticipated to debut in North America during the Spring of 2026. Having interacted with various "minimalist" phones, I am eager to explore the MC03 during CES to assess its ability to offer a private digital experience while curbing unnecessary social media usage. The critical question remains: can it compete with the many functions of a conventional smartphone?
