I embark on solo journeys to Japan each year without my children. It might seem self-centered, but it enhances my parenting.

Annually, I take a temporary departure from my home and my children to travel independently to Japan.

The physical and cultural separation provides the necessary distance to rediscover my authentic self, indulge my curiosity, and dive into learning a new language—away from the roles I inhabit, particularly being a 'Mom.'

These travels are indispensable, not merely indulgent—they nurture my well-being and, paradoxically, improve my ability as a parent.

Savoring solitude when abroad

Despite carving out personal time when my kids are at school or in childcare, everyday life remains busy with professional duties and household responsibilities.

Even when they're sleeping, I remain vigilant, ever ready for parental duties. Immersing myself in a different culture far from home allows me a true pause—to rejuvenate.

I realized last year that a fortnight is the right duration for these voyages. It provides ample time to detach from domestic cycles and rejuvenate before reentering daily life.

I return home invigorated, seamlessly reintegrating into family routines with newfound energy.

I'm fortunate to have an exceptional co-parent in my children's father. We both deem it essential to demonstrate balance, cooperation, and self-care to our children.

We alternate supporting one another during solo international trips. My travels have predominantly taken me to Japan.

Japan surprisingly mirrors my longing for tranquility and solitude, reminiscent of my Swiss homeland.

Experiencing harmony in Japan

Japan's adherence to efficiency, cleanliness, and societal peace aligns with the elements I cherish in Switzerland, offering an ideal atmosphere for introspection.

Instead of luxurious stays, I choose to engage with the local culture by exploring diverse neighborhoods.

As an avid learner delving into the Japanese language, each conversation becomes a valuable interaction, strengthening my connection to the culture.

Acknowledge your individual identity

Society often insinuates that a 'dedicated mother' should always be present; detachment is often misconstrued as neglect.

Contrary to such beliefs, these trips replenish me, enhancing my parenting capabilities.

While motherhood is integral to my identity, it does not eclipse my passions for travel, languages, and other cultures.

I was an explorer before parenthood, and that hasn't changed. Occasionally, my kids accompany me, but sometimes I venture alone.

For a brief period each year, I require solitude to recharge and refocus on central elements of my identity.

Perhaps in the near future, my children will join me on these adventures. Until then, my solo trips are pivotal for honoring my needs, so I return home as a more present parent.
