The Emergence of the AI Wingman
AI tools are increasingly being used by individuals looking to make an impression in direct messages or enhance their dating app profiles. According to three singles who shared their experiences with Business Insider, ChatGPT has been instrumental in helping them craft witty messages, bio descriptions, and navigating texting dilemmas.
A new wave of startups, eager to assist AI-driven daters, is gaining ground, while popular dating services such as Tinder and Hinge explore similar enhancements. Rebecca Koltun, from St. Petersburg, Florida, opted for advice from ChatGPT instead of friends, after meeting a man in a VIP club section in Tampa. The AI suggested she not be the first to text, reasoning he might be accustomed to such attention, and advised waiting for his move. A week later, he reached out, proving the AI's intuition successful, Rebecca recounted.
This article continues Business Insider's series 'Love in the Age of AI,' exploring the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on romantic pursuits, challenging the traditional dating market. Previously in the series, we discussed how dating apps are significantly investing in technology to recapture users.
Rebecca Koltun exemplifies the burgeoning trend of individuals using AI as both relationship consultants and companions. AI chatbots aid users in fine-tuning their dating profiles and generating appealing introductory messages, while dating novices seek advice on post-date texting. These AI applications are rapidly becoming a staple in the dating world.
Welcome to the AI Era in Dating
The potential of AI in romance is being harnessed by a growing number of tech enterprises. For instance, Rizz, established by Roman Khaves in 2022, rose to prominence by providing clever responses and compatibility checks from chat transcripts. The app quickly amassed 13 million downloads and an active user base that ensures profitability even without external investment.
In addition to Rizz, companies like YourMove and Roast are gaining traction. YourMove has exceeded a million downloads, while Roast boasts millions of users. Smaller ventures such as Wingman, FireTexts, and Amori have created unique niches, with Amori being one of the few to receive venture capital backing. Most of these startups cater to dating app users and those seeking to enhance flirty message exchanges.
Changing Dynamics of Traditional Dating Platforms
Major dating platforms are incorporating AI elements and may soon eclipse smaller competitors. Tinder’s AI-driven photo selection feature, for instance, and Hinge’s feedback-giving AI, are early steps in this direction. Grindr is trying out a new AI assistant, with reports of positive responses.
Despite a ripe environment for mergers, most AI startup founders are wary of acquisition. Khaves mentioned turning down Match Group's interest. YourMove and Roast representatives have noted discussions with big dating companies, yet expressed skepticism about the established apps' technological advancements.
However, there's a fair share of skepticism regarding AI in dating. Individuals like Daksha Franklin, who experimented with AI to refine her dating profile, found the results lacking and resorted to personal input instead. Even so, she was impressed by ChatGPT’s description of her ideal partner, proving that AI’s role in dating, though evolving, is still under scrutiny.
