A Major Update for the Beloved Beginner-Friendly Linux OS

The launch of the elementaryOS 8.1 beta heralds enhanced refinement and user-friendliness for this widely appreciated operating system.

Heightened Security Features

The latest update places a strong emphasis on strengthening security. Previously introduced with version 8, Secure Session, powered by Wayland, ensured user privacy by demanding explicit permission from applications before they could access sensitive features like monitoring keys or capturing screens.

In version 8.1, Secure Session has been set as the default setting, enhancing protection across modern hardware, thanks to better Wayland support. The control over permissions is now more detailed, offering users greater confidence.

Moreover, a crucial security enhancement dims all non-essential elements during sudo authentication, leaving only the password prompt visible. This reduces potential risks of malicious apps capturing passwords.

Enhanced Multitasking and Window Management

Multitasking capabilities in elementaryOS see significant improvements. The Dock, replacing Plank, now displays color-coded dots indicating apps with multiple open windows, aligning with different workspaces.

Through the Background Portal, users can manage which apps can run in the background and access advanced system settings more conveniently.

There is also an introduction of a '+' button on the Dock for easy workspace management and creation. Users can reconfigure workspaces through simple drag-and-drop actions and initiate new tasks directly from the Dock.

Additionally, hot corners are configurable even when an application is running in full screen, streamlining multitasking via System Settings.

Revamped App Management

Previously, the integration of Flathub into the App Center expanded access to various applications. In version 8.1, all applications now showcase a percentage-based rating system powered by the same server as GNOME Software.

The expanded app management includes support for controller-enabled games, additional app addons, and detailed license information encouraging user participation in development. The action button for apps has been updated to 'Install' to reduce user confusion.

Importantly, application updates have been separated from system updates. System updates are now handled under System Settings, providing clearer information about the updates, including their size.

Overall Advancements

elementaryOS continues to delight users with its elegance and ease of use. The 8.1 beta further showcases the team’s commitment to innovation and user feedback.
