Fatal Incident in Redding Floods; Cisco Grove Residents Rescued After River Rises

A tragic event unfolded in Redding as severe flooding claimed one life.

Emergency services, including police and firefighters, have been actively engaging in water rescues. In response, the Red Cross organized a shelter for evacuees located at the Congregational Church on Foothills Boulevard.

The National Weather Service issued a warning on Sunday night that extreme weather conditions in South/Central Shasta County, encompassing downtown Redding, sections of Interstate 5, and State Route 299, posed a grave flood risk. The flash flood alert was lifted at 10:45 p.m. local time; citizens were cautioned to never drive on submerged roads.

Cisco Grove Area on High Alert

Meanwhile, authorities in Placer County released an evacuation warning over the weekend as the South Yuba River surged due to intense rainfall, affecting the Cisco Grove region.

According to the Truckee Fire Protection District, a challenging rescue operation was conducted at Donner Summit on Sunday afternoon.

The sudden swelling of the South Yuba River trapped residents inside a home, necessitating the rescue operation. Fortunately, all nine individuals were safely evacuated without any harm, reported the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

The fire department emphasized the potential dangers of fluctuating water levels during continuous rainfall. Residents are urged to avoid proximity to the river and warned against driving or walking through floodwaters.

Preparation and Safety Measures Urged

With water levels climbing near Hampshire Rocks Road, between Donner Pass Road and Cisco Road, Placer County officials have been on alert.

The sheriff's department warned that additional flooding could occur unexpectedly, advising residents to gather essential supplies, stay informed via official channels, and be ready to evacuate if conditions deteriorate.

The National Weather Service has categorized the area around Donner Summit as at a slight to moderate risk of excessive rainfall, with the flood watch remaining in effect until December 26.
