Google Assistant's Tenure Extended for Android Users
Gemini Transition Postponed Beyond 2025
Google had initially aimed to phase out its Assistant from most Android devices by the close of 2025, making way for the new AI assistant, Gemini. However, plans have shifted, and now the tech giant is granting more time to ensure that Gemini can effectively become the go-to digital assistant for its users.
Recognizing the need for a smoother transition, Google has modified its earlier timeline. The company plans to continue updating devices to replace Assistant with Gemini over the next year. It has promised to provide further insights as months progress, potentially extending this conversion beyond early 2026.
Gemini: Taking Over Assistant's Role
The discussion about discontinuing Google Assistant gained traction when Gemini was unveiled, designed to inherit Assistant's functions, such as managing smart devices linked to smartphones. The Pixel 9 Series, launched in 2024, already had Gemini as its standard assistant, signaling Google's intent to integrate Gemini across its range of products.
The company's broader vision involves updating all devices that interface with phones — ranging from tablets and cars to headphones and watches — with the AI-enabled Gemini. However, to qualify for this upgrade, the devices need to meet specific requirements, such as running on at least Android 10 and having a minimum of 2GB of RAM.
