Ubisoft Acquires 'March of Giants' MOBA from Amazon

Ubisoft is expanding its engagement with the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre by purchasing the rights to 'March of Giants' from Amazon, along with recruiting the development team responsible for its creation. As part of the deal, Amazon will continue to support by promoting 'March of Giants' through Twitch, with finalization anticipated on December 16.

Future Prospects for 'March of Giants'

Currently, there is no specific release date for 'March of Giants'. Initially revealed as a free-to-play game in August by Amazon, it had an alpha playtest following its announcement, with the next anticipated test session planned for 2026. The forthcoming substantial update will feature new entities, broadened competition modes, and foundational elements crafted for sustained growth.

Gameplay Overview

'March of Giants' operates as a 4 vs 4 strategic game where players take command of colossal military leaders. Participants instruct large armies composed of thousands to battle opponent titans. Defensive strategies include warding off adversaries' minions while deploying supportive reinforcements such as trenches, tanks, and bunkers—collectively named Battleworks—to secure victory.

Ubisoft’s Position in the MOBA Market

While Ubisoft's repertoire includes the action-packed 'For Honor', which aligns with MOBA standards, venturing further into this genre with 'March of Giants' showcases a strategic push. However, Ubisoft will confront challenges, facing fierce competition from industry giants like 'League of Legends' and 'Dota 2'.

Development and Creative Direction

Originally developed at Amazon Games Montreal—a studio with a five-year history—the acquisition sees several ex-Ubisoft talents returning to their former company. This includes key figures from the original 'Rainbow Six Siege' team, among them Xavier Marquis, the founder of Amazon Games Montreal and creative force behind 'March of Giants'.
