Disney's Claims Against Google for Extensive Copyright Breach After OpenAI Agreement
Disney has lodged accusations against Google, alleging significant copyright violations. The entertainment giant asserts that Google's AI systems have produced images that closely mirror iconic characters from Disney franchises such as Frozen, Deadpool, and Star Wars. This accusation was revealed through insights shared by Variety.
In a formal cease-and-desist letter dispatched to the tech company, Disney insisted that Google should halt any actions that might infringe upon their protected intellectual property. This notice was delivered a mere day prior to the unveiling of Disney's substantial financial partnership with OpenAI.
This newly minted deal with OpenAI is set to empower Sora AI users, enabling the creation of visually compelling videos utilizing a diverse range of over 200 characters from beloved Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars universes. These AI-driven video creations are also scheduled for inclusion on the Disney Plus streaming service.
Disney's Objections to AI Utilization
Within the contents of the letter, Disney's position is stark: Google is said to be infringing on their copyrights extensively. Allegedly, Google is replicating a substantial array of Disney's copyrighted materials without obtaining proper permissions, intending to use them for training and developing advanced generative AI models and associated services.
Disney affirmed its stance resolutely, emphasizing that it will aggressively defend against any unsanctioned commercial usage of its distinct characters by AI entities masquerading as service providers.
Additional Legal Actions
Disney's legal team has a history of protecting its creative works, having issued similar cease-and-desist communications to other companies in the tech field such as Meta and Character.AI, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding their intellectual assets.
