Reddit Embarks on Public Figure Verification
The checkmark has emerged as a nearly universal emblem across social media, even though its implications differ widely among platforms. Reddit, which traditionally paid little attention to verifying users' identities, is now embracing this trend by testing a verification system for public personalities.
Initial Testing and Implementation
In a new phase, Reddit is launching a "limited alpha test" of its verification feature. The test involves a select group of accounts, notably including journalists from prominent news organizations.
Furthermore, businesses that currently hold an "official" badge, as first trialed by Reddit in 2023, will soon be identified with a grey "verified" mark instead.
Challenges in Verification Systems
The concept of verification has posed significant challenges across various platforms, often leading to user confusion. This is particularly evident on platforms where a verification badge can be obtained simply by subscribing.
Reddit's current strategy mirrors the approach once taken by Twitter prior to its acquisition by Elon Musk, where high-profile individuals were the focal point.
Purpose and Process of Verification
Selected accounts will receive checkmarks to signal authenticated identities, mainly focusing on high-profile users. This feature aims to assist Reddit participants in understanding the identity of those they interact with during significant discussions, such as AMAs hosted by experts or celebrities, news coverage by journalists, or content shared by brands.
According to Reddit, their verification initiative is voluntary and requires users to opt-in, and it intends not to symbolize status. The objective is to provide clarity and reduce the workload on moderators who often manually verify accounts.
Future of Reddit's Verification
Presently, Reddit does not allow any user, including prominent ones, to apply for verification; however, this might change. The company asserts it is not restricting verification only to celebrities or public figures.
A representative mentioned the aspiration that ultimately any Reddit user wishing to confirm their identity will be granted the ability to do so.
Limitations of Verified Accounts
It's essential to note that obtaining a verified status on Reddit doesn't entail any special benefits, such as increased exposure or exemption from subreddit-specific regulations.
Eligibility for verification requires users to be in good standing and actively engaged on the platform. Accounts associated with NSFW tags or that mainly participate in NSFW-tagged communities are excluded from verification.
