Instagram is introducing a novel feature that empowers you to influence the topics its algorithm endorses, similar to the capabilities already available on TikTok. Initially available on the Reels tab, this option will gradually be extended to cover other sections like Explore within the app. As with numerous initiatives by Meta, this functionality is driven by artificial intelligence.

Acknowledging that users' interests change over time, Instagram aims to offer enhanced methods for users to tailor their viewing experiences. By leveraging AI, users can now effortlessly adjust and refine the subjects that populate their Reels, ensuring recommendations that are more aligned with individual preferences.

Navigate and Adjust Your Feed

To interact with and modify the Reels algorithm, a user can access the 'Your Algorithm' option by selecting the icon found in the upper-right corner of the app (two lines marked with hearts). This feature displays categories Instagram suggests might interest you, allowing you to easily mark preferences for more or less visibility per topic, thereby customizing your recommendation feed.

The option also allows you to review an overview of the primary categories Instagram predicts you appreciate the most, conveniently positioned at the forefront of this feature.

Customize and Share Interest Preferences

You can input specific topics you wish to see either more or less, leading to adaptations in your Reels recommendations. Furthermore, there lies an option to broadcast your predilections through your Story, sharing this insight with friends and followers who might be curious about your interests.

Recent AI Challenges and Future Advancements

There was a recent revelation of another AI-driven feature that did not receive positive feedback from a portion of Instagram's user base. The platform was found to be generating dramatic and sometimes misleading headlines, likely produced by a large language model. This aligns with the ongoing trajectory of AI becoming more entrenched within Instagram's applications, which is evident from Meta's recent acquisitions and strategic shifts.

This new 'Your Algorithm' aspect for the Reels tab is launching exclusively in the United States, with plans for further international rollouts in the future.
