Uber Introduces Kiosks for Ride Bookings Without an App
Initial Launch at LaGuardia—with More Locations to Follow
Uber is unveiling a new way for travelers to book rideshares independently of the mobile app. This service is being positioned as particularly beneficial to international visitors who might lack a local data plan. Additionally, it serves as a handy option when your phone battery is depleted, offering a hassle-free alternative.
Travelers can approach these kiosks, input their desired destination and select the type of ride they wish to use. Following this, they will receive a printout detailing their reserved ride. This innovative kiosk will initially appear at Terminal C within New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. However, Uber plans to expand this offering to other airports, hotels, and ports over the coming months.
Competing in the Airport Transit Market
By implementing these kiosks, Uber edges closer as a direct contender against conventional taxi services at airports. Without the reliance on its app, the kiosk essentially acts as a ride dispatcher, allowing passengers to choose their preferred transportation method, whether it be a rideshare or a traditional yellow cab, based on specific criteria such as wait times.
Uber’s Shuttle Service Initiatives
In another strategic move, Uber initiated a shuttle bus service from LaGuardia Airport with travel options to transit hubs in Manhattan, priced at $18. Launched in October 2024, this service was subsequently extended to John F. Kennedy Airport by March 2025. Today, the company announced its shuttle buses will also serve Newark Liberty International Airport, ensuring that all significant NYC airports are covered by these offerings.
