Waymo's Robotaxi Software Update to Address School Bus Stops

Initiative Follows Federal Scrutiny Over Violation of School Bus Regulations

In an effort to ensure their autonomous vehicles maintain safety around school buses, Waymo plans to implement a fresh software update in 2025. This move, unlike traditional recalls where vehicles are removed from operation, involves a proactive alteration to their software systems. The update responds to scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and Waymo intends to officially submit this plan to the federal body at the start of the coming week.

Mauricio Peña, who oversees safety at Waymo, emphasized the company's commitment to reducing accident rates compared to those of human drivers. However, he acknowledged the necessity for ongoing improvement in operational conduct.

Peña articulated, "As a proactive measure, we have opted to initiate a voluntary software adjustment with NHTSA that focuses on managing vehicle speed and halting effectively in certain conditions," he communicated to various media channels. "Continuous evaluation of our vehicle performance and implementing essential improvements will remain our priority."

Investigation Findings

The NHTSA's investigation uncovered instances where Waymo's autonomous cars failed to yield for school buses that were displaying stop signs and flashing lights, notably occurring in cities such as Atlanta and Austin, Texas. This oversight prompted regulatory concern.

Previous Software Updates

Earlier this year, Waymo carried out another software update after some vehicles were reported to have collided with objects like gates and chains. The preceding year witnessed two additional software updates, one addressing a collision with a telephone pole, and another correcting repeated incidents involving two robotaxis that collided with the same pickup truck while it was being towed.
