On March 27, 2023, Hallie's life, alongside her classmates Evelyn Dieckhaus and William Kinney, was abruptly ended in a shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville.

Overwhelmed with grief, Hallie's father, Chad Scruggs, instinctively sought comfort in her room that day.

Returning only occasionally, Jada Scruggs describes her visits as confronting—a room that now marks her daughter's stark absence.

For some parents, like those two thousand miles away in California, similar scenarios unfold. The room left by their 15-year-old, fond of her brothers and Vans sneakers, quietly endures as a sanctuary of unresolved grief.

Capturing the Unseen: A Photographic Tribute

Hartman started this project seven years ago, reaching out to families affected by school shootings to photograph the enduring spaces of their lost children.

'It's a profound way to honor these lives, by stepping into their personal spaces,' Hartman explains.

Collaborating with photographer Lou Bopp, Hartman continues to capture these poignant images, to preserve the essence of children who are no longer there.

A Netflix documentary now chronicles Hartman and Bopp’s journey, offering a heartfelt exploration of these preserved spaces across America.

Moving Forward While Holding On

The Muehlbergers, processing their grief, faced the difficult decision to move away from the room that held their daughter Gracie's memory.

Sorting through her pictures and mementos, they found solace in participating in Hartman’s project, eventually relocating to Georgia and establishing 'Gracie's Point' as a tribute in their new home.

The project persists, with Hartman committed to documenting these sacred spaces as long as families welcome it.

The ongoing message is clear: while the world might move forward, these families continue to honor their loved ones in the unique spaces that tell their children's stories.

In Nashville, the Scruggs family remains determined to preserve Hallie's room, with tenacious dedication to remembering the daughter who filled it. They have even given some of her drawings to an artist to create a commemorative piece, preserving Hallie's joy through art.
