Teen Ousts Mentor in Surry County Election

In Surry County, Virginia, 19-year-old Cameran Drew recently demonstrated remarkable ambition in a local government race.

The youthful contender challenged established norms by vying for a role on the Surry County Board of Supervisors.

"My goal was to take on this role because I believed in my ability to truly serve our community," Drew expressed during an interview, underlining his intent to advocate for both young residents and the county as a whole.

His strong sense of determination is something Drew attributes to his high school civics teacher, Kenneth Bell, who he admires deeply.

An Unexpected Rivalry

Bell is a civics instructor at the local high school, and he always predicted Drew's future in politics due to his impressive qualities. However, Bell didn't foresee how soon Drew's political career would begin.

In Bell's words, "Cameran would have posed a serious challenge to any contender he faced," acknowledging Drew's potential.

Drew appreciates Bell’s "encouragement" and "preparation," which played a crucial role during this pivotal time.

The Mentor Becomes the Opponent

Interestingly, for Drew to secure the position, he needed to run against an interim supervisor—none other than Bell himself, who stepped in following a resignation earlier this year.

Despite the direct competition, both Drew and Bell handled the situation with grace and mutual respect. According to Drew, "Our interactions remained cordial and never uncomfortable."

During the campaign, Bell was even found defending Drew against criticisms, particularly those focused on Drew’s young age.

"Although he's young, Cameran is very devoted to sparking positive change," Bell acknowledged, making a rare statement for a political adversary.

"As a teacher, seeing a former student make such a bold move is both exciting and rewarding," Bell reflected, noting the pride in contributing to Drew’s growth.

A Narrow Victory

When the votes were tallied, Drew emerged victorious by a narrow margin: 345 to 337, based on unofficial results—a mere 1.2% difference.

Bell gracefully accepted the outcome. In his concession, he warmly congratulated Drew, expressing, "I couldn’t be prouder of you."

Overcome with emotion, Drew gratefully acknowledged Bell's support, feeling "speechless" by his mentor’s graciousness.
