A chimpanzee broke free from its enclosure at the Indianapolis Zoo on a Friday, resulting in zoo visitors being instructed to stay indoors temporarily. This unexpected event was reported to CBS affiliate by people present at the zoo.

Emergency Response and Visitor Accounts

At 10:10 a.m., a call was logged by the Indianapolis Fire Department for an alleged animal bite incident at the zoo. The report was covered by the station, detailing how zoo-goers were advised to remain within the dolphin exhibit while concerns about the escaped chimpanzee were addressed. A photograph captured by someone at the scene showed the chimpanzee perched atop the enclosure.

Among the witnesses was Sherman Williams, a bus driver accompanying a school group. In disbelief, he shared his experience with 37 children, parents, and educators in tow, questioning the presence of a wandering chimpanzee at the zoo.

Zoo and Law Enforcement Response

It was noted that the zoo had 21 chimpanzees in residence as of May 2024. Following reports of the breakout, several visitors recounted being advised to remain in their vehicles for safety.
