Fatal Crash on Michigan Interstate

A semitractor-trailer collided with traffic that had halted on a Michigan highway, leading to the tragic deaths of four individuals and injuries to 17 others shortly before midnight on Saturday, as confirmed by authorities.

Officers from the Michigan State Police were on duty along Interstate 96, overseeing the flow of vehicles while crews worked on installing power lines over the road, according to an official statement.

Before the collision, several cars were stopped in the westbound lane of the expressway near the M-52 junction. The road had been temporarily closed entirely for necessary utility work conducted by Consumers Energy, police reported.

Sequence of Events

The vehicles resumed movement when the truck collided with them, authorities mentioned.

It seems the truck driver failed to notice the traffic jam and was unable to halt the vehicle in time. The semi-truck, traveling in the left lane, hit multiple cars, according to police accounts.

The impact ignited fires in the truck and over a dozen other vehicles, police indicated.

A total of seventeen wounded individuals were transferred to UM Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Hospital in Lansing for treatment of serious injuries, as stated by the police.
