Study Reveals Inhalers' Impact on Carbon Footprint

Research indicates that inhalers meant to address respiratory ailments contribute significantly to greenhouse gases, which can complicate the very issues they are intended to alleviate.

Published recently, the study assesses how inhalers designated for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) add approximately 24.9 million metric tons of carbon emissions in the U.S. between 2014 and 2024. This figure is comparable to the annual emissions created by roughly 530,000 gasoline-driven vehicles.

With millions of inhalers being used yearly, the emissions produced exacerbate climate change, thereby intensifying the respiratory disorders that these devices aim to treat, as observed in an editorial accompanying the research.

Rising Respiratory Health Concerns

Asthma affects 28 million individuals in the United States, while 34 million are dealing with chronic lung diseases. With climate change progressing, these illnesses are expected to burgeon, raising both the incidence and the severity of symptoms.

Metered-dose inhalers, traditionally recognizable by their distinct shape, are identified as the principal contributors to this environmental dilemma, accounting for 98% of these emissions over ten years.

The challenge lies not with the drugs themselves but with the hydrofluoroalkane propellants used within these inhalers. These chemicals are robust greenhouse agents also found in aerosol products.

Dr. William Feldman, the study's lead researcher and a pulmonologist, highlighted the dual crisis posed by these devices. He suggests a shift towards low-emission options could aid both patient health and environmental conservation.

Alternative Inhaler Technologies

The study identifies that other inhaler types, such as dry powder inhalers and soft mist inhalers, are less detrimental to the environment. They effectively deliver medication without relying on hydrofluoroalkane propellants.
