Flash Flooding Potential in the Western US

The weekend could see isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, primarily impacting areas situated north of those most recently affected by flash floods. For Saturday, however, the threat of flash flooding is minimal due to a reduction in tropical moisture.

As we move into Sunday and Monday, a resurgence of monsoonal moisture is predicted to introduce slight chances of flash flooding—rated at a Level 1 threat—across regions of the Desert Southwest.

Sunday’s outlook includes the possibility of sporadic heavy rains and storms, which might generate localized flash floods in southern sections of California and Arizona.

Flood Alert for Monday

By Monday, the minor risk from flooding is expected to extend into New Mexico, with particular attention needed in areas affected by past wildfires. These burn scar regions are notably susceptible to flash floods and may experience sudden debris flows and mudslides due to reduced ground absorption capacity.

Looking into the following week, the forecast anticipates a period of dry and stable weather across most of the Southwestern United States.

Recent Flooding Incidents

The last few days have witnessed intense rainfall and flash floods across the Southwest, tragically resulting in a fatal incident.

In a heartbreaking event in Barstow, California, flash floods carried away a 2-year-old child after floodwaters swept the family vehicle off the road. Despite exhaustive search efforts lasting over 20 hours, emergency teams eventually recovered the child’s body.

The Southwest also experienced flash floods elsewhere, with some areas seeing rapid rainfall that resulted in between 1 to 2 inches of rain within an hour, leading to impassable roads and overflowing floodwaters.
