California Flash Flood: Search Continues for Missing Toddler

Authorities in Barstow, California, are in the midst of an urgent operation to locate a toddler who was lost to the floodwaters on Thursday night.

The two-year-old boy, Xavier Padilla Aguilera, was with his father, Brandon Padilla Aguilera, age 26, when their car was taken by rising waters around 7:14 p.m. Their vehicle was overtaken on a primary road near the city, approximately 115 miles to the northeast of Los Angeles.

As the floods carried them north, the father and son were separated from their car. Fortunately, Brandon was rescued later on and received medical attention at Barstow Community Hospital where he was treated before being released.

The Search Efforts and Community Involvement

Family members informed ABC News station KABC-TV that Xavier, who has autism and is nonverbal, was last seen in black pants, a black shirt, and black and white Nike sneakers. This information is crucial for identifying him if found.

The severe weather of the day also caused a massive mudslide in Oak Glen, witnessed in dramatic footage obtained by news outlets, emphasizing the widespread impact of the conditions.

Rescue operations have been far-reaching, with assistance coming from multiple agencies; San Bernardino's Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino County Fire's Swift Water Rescue Team. Additionally, the Desert Recovery Group and local community members have actively joined the search.

Community's Plea for Assistance

"We are incredibly thankful for the volunteers who are persistently searching," Leanna, Xavier's aunt, shared with KABC-TV. "If you reside nearby and can lend a hand—whether it's with flashlights or any equipment that can aid in sifting through mud and debris—we'd be immensely grateful."

KABC-TV reported that official search endeavors were temporarily halted until daylight returned Friday.

The public is urged to promptly contact authorities with any leads on Xavier's location.
