Choosing A Connecticut Coastal Town Over The Hamptons

After years of heading to the Hamptons for my retreats, I grew weary of the experience.

Much of my time was consumed by endless traffic congestion, scouring for beach parking, and battling for reservations at fashionable eateries.

Now, there's a growing movement towards finding 'destination alternatives,' uncovering lesser-known, more affordable escapes via TikTok.

I stumbled upon my 'alternative' to the Hamptons mere miles away in New England: Madison, Connecticut.

This quaint town is the epitome of serene coastal living, offering most of what the Hamptons do, but without the overwhelming crowd. It's still elegant, yet more budget-friendly, and traveling from NYC to Madison is relatively straightforward.

Here's a glimpse into what makes Madison so special.

The beaches in Madison have a magnetic pull for me, with approximately a dozen to choose from.

My personal favorite is Hammonasset Beach State Park, boasting around two miles of Long Island Sound shoreline and biking trails. Each visit is met with cleanliness and tranquility.

Madison hosts several charming bed-and-breakfasts alongside a beachfront Hilton hotel.

A Quaint Stay with Modern Touches

I often find myself at The Homestead, a luxurious B&B that impeccably marries charm with modernity. Every room here is uniquely decorated with plush furnishings and extravagant features, such as Japanese toilets and vitamin-infused showerheads.

Amenities include complimentary bikes, beach chairs, and towels, with beautiful gardens and firepit-equipped decks inviting me to enjoy the outdoors.

The Homestead serves up gourmet snacks and a posh breakfast buffet, offering delights like quiche, decadent cakes, fresh fruits, and yogurt.

Experiencing Madison's Town Center

Downtown Madison embodies relaxed New England charm, presented through a walkable, laid-back atmosphere.

I lose myself in RJ Julia Booksellers, which I confidently deem one of America's finest independent bookstores.

A visit to Savvy Tea Gourmet is essential, where an array of exclusive teas is complemented by in-store tastings, with guidance from the knowledgeable owner.

There's also an array of delightful boutiques in town, with The Dressing Room being a standout for its friendly staff and genuine sales.

Art lovers can enjoy Madison's Sculpture Mile, a free outdoor display of museum-quality sculptures that dot the town.

Perfect Rainy Day Retreats

On cooler or rainy days, the Madison Cinemas is my retreat for watching unique arthouse and international films.

This theater with a century of history offers freshly-popped popcorn with real butter and selections of local beer and wine.

The town green serves as Madison’s picturesque heart, beautifully shaded by trees. I take leisurely strolls along its paths and enjoy live music in the summer during the complimentary Sunday evening concerts.

Additionally, the vibrant farmers market livens up the area every Friday from May until Thanksgiving, with seasonal festivals often featured.

Exploring Madison's Culinary Delights

Madison is home to numerous dining spots that I look forward to visiting.

Bar Bouchée offers a slice of Europe with its French bistro ambiance and traditional cuisine. The profiteroles bathed in warm chocolate sauce are a must.

For a seafood meal paired with water views, I head to The Wharf, where my usual consists of a warm lobster roll accompanied by crispy shoestring fries.

Craving Italian reminiscent of my grandmother's cooking, Café Allegre is my go-to. The Italian kitchen serves beloved staples like spaghetti with fresh clams and hearty rigatoni with meatballs and sausage.

Seasonal Attractions in Madison

Throughout the fall, local farms, including my favorite, Bishop’s Orchard in nearby Guilford, brim with fresh produce and beautiful blooms.

Madison’s beaches are inviting year-round, with water temperatures staying warm deep into October, perfect for a swim amid autumn leaves.

In winter, the beaches offer brisk strolls and snowshoeing opportunities on wooden boardwalks, displaying another charm of this coastal retreat.
