Positive Impact of Cellphone Ban in Georgia School District

In Atlanta, Georgia, Angus and Sam start their mornings with alarms and breakfasts, but their phones become redundant as soon as they arrive at Lakeside High School, where a new policy means devices must remain in bags.

This initiative, known as the Disconnect to Reconnect program, aims to foster a more effective learning atmosphere by removing the distraction of phones from the classroom.

Teachers have noticed a marked improvement. 'Competing for students’ attention against phones was challenging,' shared Lauren Boggs, a social studies educator at Lakeside. The distraction had previously led to a drop in academic performance.

With more than 25 states implementing similar regulations on phone use during school hours, Georgia is set to follow suit by extending these restrictions to K-8 students statewide starting in 2026. DeKalb County, however, has taken a proactive approach by extending these rules to high schools already.

Lakeside High's Principal, Susan Stoddard, reported that since instituting the cellphone policy, student behavior and engagement have greatly improved. 'There has been a noticeable decrease in disruptive incidents,' she explained, noting a general enhancement in the school's environment.
