Dust Storm Engulfs Phoenix Area, Halts Airport Operations

A formidable dust storm blew through the Phoenix region on Monday, resulting in power outages, toppling trees, and prompting a temporary cessation of activities at the city's primary airport.

Dramatic footage and images revealed the looming threat of a dust wall—often referred to as a 'haboob'—as it swiftly advanced towards neighborhoods, the Arizona State University football venue, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Understanding Haboobs

Haboobs, which are predominantly seen in the Southwestern United States, form due to potent thunderstorm winds and can arise unexpectedly, significantly obstructing visibility.

An Arizona resident recounted to The Associated Press how she was with her children when engulfed by the dust storm. 'It was as if I extended my arm and couldn't see it,' she shared, mentioning the gritty taste of dust and the unsettling vibration of her vehicle.

Dust Storms Impact Beyond Arizona

Earlier during the weekend, similar dust storms wreaked havoc at Nevada's Burning Man festival located in the Black Rock Desert. Visual documentation captured attendees battling to secure their tents in the face of aggressive winds and virtually nonexistent visibility.
