Recall Alert: Blue Ridge Beef's Puppy Mix and Salmonella Concerns

In a recent alert, Blue Ridge Beef has initiated a recall of its Puppy Mix pet food across several states in the U.S., following a consumer's report of illness in their litter due to the product, which tested positive for salmonella contamination.

The affected product comes in two-pound frozen packages and was sold mostly through retail stores in states including Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. This recall, issued by the pet food company based in North Carolina, was also highlighted in a notification from the Food and Drug Administration.

According to recall details, these products were distributed between August 6th and August 23rd, bearing the UPC number 854298001696 with lot numbers 08/06/N25 and 08/16/N25.

The issue first came to light when the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services received the initial complaint, prompting Blue Ridge Beef to respond. Subsequently, the FDA confirmed the presence of salmonella in the product last week.

Salmonella poses health risks to both animals and humans upon exposure. Infected pets might exhibit symptoms like fatigue, diarrhea—potentially bloody—fever, and vomiting.

Humans can contract similar symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (possibly with blood), stomach cramps, and fever. Although uncommon, salmonella can also lead to more severe conditions such as infections in the arteries, heart valve inflammation, arthritis, muscle soreness, eye irritation, and urinary tract issues.

Consumers who have purchased this product should return it to the place of purchase or ensure it is disposed of securely to prevent access by children, pets, and outdoor animals.
