Massive Recall of Ground Beef Due to E. Coli Concerns

Federal officials have reported a significant recall involving over 100,000 pounds of ground beef owing to potential E. coli contamination.

Wolverine Packing Co., based in Detroit, has issued a recall on close to 170,000 pounds of its ground beef, which was distributed to eateries nationwide, as per the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

This action follows reports from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to FSIS about multiple cases of illness. A subsequent analysis of a beef sample revealed the presence of E. coli.

The affected fresh beef products are marked with a 'use by' date of November 14, 2024. Meanwhile, the frozen versions were manufactured on October 22, 2024.

Restaurants are advised to discard any of these products in their inventory.

Health Risks of E. Coli

Infection stemming from E. coli can lead to symptoms such as severe dehydration, bleeding diarrhea, and stomach cramps, typically manifesting two to eight days post-exposure, with three to four days being the average.

While most recover fully within a week, the infection can occasionally result in kidney failure.
