Ex-Dallas Officer Amber Guyger to Pay Nearly $100 Million in Civil Case
Amber Guyger, previously serving in the Dallas police force, now faces a civil judgment demanding a payment of $98.6 million to the family of Botham Jean.
The incident occurred six years ago when Guyger entered Jean's apartment, mistakenly believing it was hers, and fatally shot him. She was later convicted for this act.
Her conviction for murder led to a 10-year prison term, which she is still serving. Guyger claimed her confusion led to the tragic event, as she was not on duty and her body camera failed to record the incident.
Two years prior, Guyger's attempt to overturn the conviction was unsuccessful with a failed appeal. Recently, on September 29, she reappeared in court settings.
The lawsuit filed by the Jean family labelled Guyger's actions as excessive, ultimately leading to Botham Jean’s untimely death.
One of the family’s legal representatives, along with civil rights attorney Ben Crump, issued a statement post-verdict, expressing their stance on the matter.
Notably, Guyger chose to be absent from the proceedings held in Dallas.
