Violent Clashes Near the U.S.-Mexico Border Lead to Multiple Deaths

A violent sequence of encounters in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, close to the Texas border, resulted in the deaths of three police officers and four alleged cartel members, officials reported on Wednesday.

In addition to the fatalities, five police officers suffered injuries amid the clashes occurring along highways encircling the town of San Fernando, Tamaulipas.

On Tuesday, gunmen associated with drug cartels established roadblocks and launched assaults on police patrols. Later that day, they further attacked a convoy of mourners following the remains of one of the initial attack's casualties.

The state security office confirmed the loss of lives on Wednesday, though details regarding the conditions of the injured officers were not yet released.

Historical Violence in San Fernando

Positioned between Ciudad Victoria, the state capital, and the border towns of Matamoros and Reynosa, San Fernando is no stranger to severe violence. Between 2010 and 2011, the town witnessed horrific bloodshed, including the massacre of 72 migrants and the deaths of approximately 122 bus passengers by cartel members.

Currently, the Gulf cartel and the rebranded Zetas cartel, known now as Cartel del Noreste, hold significant sway in Tamaulipas.

Additional Strife in Nearby States

On Wednesday, in the neighboring state of Sonora, cartel suspects fatally shot a detective and injured two others in an attack that also saw the suspects colliding with a police vehicle.

The incident unfolded early Wednesday on a road leading to the border town of Sasabe, close to Nogales, Arizona, with a Mexican marine suffering injuries as well. All those wounded have been reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities pursued an SUV without headlights on a secluded road, leading to a collision with both detective and marine vehicles before gunfire ensued, resulting in the deaths of three suspects.

Continued Tensions Along the Border

These occurrences follow recent violent events near the Mexico-U.S. border, including fatal shootings by Mexico's National Guard earlier this month.

Also last month, Nuevo Laredo, a violent city opposite Laredo, Texas, saw criticism leveled against the army and National Guard by human rights groups and families. This city continues to be under the control of the Northeast Cartel, a remnant of the notorious Zetas group.
