Discovery of Human Skulls Tied to Missing Woman and Other Victims in New Mexico

Authorities in New Mexico have reported the discovery of numerous human skulls linked to ongoing investigations into several missing persons, including a woman who vanished in 2019. These remains were found near the southeastern border, prompting further inquiries.

The discovery unfolded while law enforcement officials were executing a search warrant for a man named Cecil Villanueva. A local resident from Jal reported a troubling encounter with Villanueva which led investigators to him. The individual mentioned that Villanueva had carried with him two bags and made alarming comments during the interaction.

The resident observed Villanueva discarding items from the vehicle, some appearing to be human remnants. This prompted the Lea County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a search, which uncovered bone fragments later confirmed by a pathologist to be human. Forensic specialists identified parts of skulls and jawbones among the findings.

The investigation revealed evidence suggesting that 10 to 20 human skulls might be present at a property in Jal, previously associated with rumors of being a site of human remains. A forensic anthropologist, alongside a team of investigators, delivered these remains to the Albuquerque Office of the Medical Investigator for in-depth analysis and potential identification.

The authorities have released minimal official statements regarding the specific details of this case but confirm that the investigation may connect with the disappearance of Angela McManes from 2019, who resided near the location under scrutiny.

Efforts are actively underway to establish any correlations between these remains and McManes, as well as potentially identifying other victims tied to the evidence unearthed.

While no arrest has been announced linking Villanueva to the discovery, reports suggest he allegedly purchased the skulls via online channels. Law enforcement remains engaged in verifying the authenticity of these skulls.

Officials urge anyone with relevant information about the case to reach out to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office or local Crime Stoppers. CBS News continues to seek further clarification from the sheriff's office but has yet to receive a response.
