The nation is prioritizing the completion of a specific section of the project, spanning 1.5 miles, which includes a stadium set to potentially host the 2034 World Cup, according to insiders.

Adjustments made in the fall incorporated the stadium into Neom's plans, as reported by Reuters. A high-altitude sports complex for the 2029 Asian Winter Games also ranks high on the list.

Leadership Shifts Amid Cost Management

Shortly following the announcement, Neom's CEO unexpectedly resigned, raising questions about potential additional exits among his team.

In prior weeks, Neom showcased its capacity to host international sporting events via a triathlon and a men's basketball tournament, yet declined to comment further on these developments.

Reducing the Scale of a Grand Masterpiece

Originally, this monumental project was estimated at $500 billion, targeting a residential capacity to rival New York City, with about 9 million inhabitants. It was to feature diverse areas, most notably The Line—a 106-mile linear development enveloped in reflective surfaces.

However, with cost estimates skyrocketing to potentially $1.5 trillion, demographic forecasts for 2030 have been substantially revised downward.

A Cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030

Integral to the Vision 2030 strategy is using Neom as a catalyst to lessen Saudi Arabia's dependence on oil by diversifying the economy and boosting tourism.

Since its inception, the city's trajectory has been marred by financial hurdles and repeated construction delays. In a related note, one Neom official claimed a significant portion of global steel was earmarked for this project.

Human Rights Concerns

The project faces criticism over alleged human rights violations, particularly concerning the treatment of workers involved. Saudi authorities refuted accusations of executing three individuals based on their opposition to the evictions for Neom, stating links to terrorist factions instead.
