Will Trump's Relationship with Kim Jong-un be Revived? Concerns in South Korea.

The potential second term of Donald J. Trump introduces new uncertainties on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea's leader possibly seeing an opportunity to reconnect in a time of heightened nuclear tensions.

Concerns from Seoul

During the 2024 election phase, Trump critiqued the U.S.-South Korea partnership, claiming it was unfavorable for America, and criticized South Korea for not contributing enough financially for the 28,500 U.S. forces based there.

Yet, his remarks about Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader who has posed nuclear threats toward the South, were notably different, depicting Kim as though he were an old acquaintance.

In July, Trump stated, "It's beneficial to have good relations when there's someone with many nuclear weapons," referring to his interactions with Kim. He continued, "I believe he wants me to return. I suspect he misses my presence, if truth be told."

Anticipation and Anxiety of Trump's Return

As the possibility of Trump resuming office looms, South Koreans find themselves preparing for potential renewed tensions on the Korean Peninsula, reminiscent of the diplomatic ups and downs from his first term.

There's concern that Trump might once again hint at removing U.S. forces from South Korea unless the latter assumes a larger portion of the cost, in addition to rekindling a risky diplomatic camaraderie with Kim Jong-un.

Lee Byong-chul, a specialist on North Korean affairs at Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, predicted, "The alliance between South Korea and the U.S. could face turbulent times, but a meeting between Kim and Trump might be on the horizon."
