Why a Talented Professional Left a Lucrative Google Job for Greater Fulfilment
Earlier in the year, Joslyn Orgill faced a pivotal moment in her professional life: continue with her high-paying role at Google as a data engineer, or depart to chase more personally rewarding ambitions. Although there were compelling reasons to remain, such as Google’s prestigious reputation and her significant achievements, including interning at ExxonMobil and Adobe, her personal goals began to shift.
From a financial standpoint, Orgill had secured stability. She and her husband had recently purchased a home in Austin, further suggesting that remaining at Google was the prudent choice. Yet, over time, the scales tipped towards leaving as worries about long-term job security in the tech industry grew, and the work seemed less impactful.
Orgill's decision was influenced by her experiences at Brigham Young University, where she discovered a passion for teaching while working as an adjunct professor. This joy for instructing others rekindled a desire to return to academia.
The Courage to Pursue Passion Over Pay
In November of the previous year, after some deliberation, Orgill accepted a position at Google, thanks to a referral that showcased the company’s vibrant environment. Initially thrilled, she soon began to feel that her work largely went unnoticed and did not fulfill her desire for significant impact.
Observing a slump in tech hiring, Orgill felt uncertain about finding a more fitting role that would satisfy her career expectations. This doubt was intensified by Google's layoff announcement affecting thousands, casting shadows of uncertainty over her future in tech.
Choosing to Follow Her Heart
Ultimately, Orgill decided to pursue a Ph.D. in computer science with a specialization in education at the University of Illinois. Her goal is to eventually work in academia, possibly as a professor, to promote inclusivity in computer science fields and inspire confidence in underrepresented communities to engage with technology.
With her husband’s remote job providing a safety net, the financial risk was mitigated, though selling their Austin house proved challenging. The financial trade-off was substantial, yet Orgill’s commitment to finding personal satisfaction outweighed the monetary benefits.

Reflecting on her decision, Orgill advises others considering a significant career change to weigh financial costs against the potential for personal fulfillment. Support from loved ones proved pivotal in her journey, particularly her husband's encouragement, allowing her to pursue what truly resonated with her interests.
